Hanoi Train Street is one of the most iconic and exciting attractions in Hanoi. Located in the heart of the city, this incredible experience is a must-see when you are in Hanoi! Where trains pass just inches from the doorsteps of local homes and cafes. I had the pleasure of visiting Hanoi last August 2023, and visiting this street was definitely one of the highlights of that trip! Despite some challenges and restrictions, it’s worth the effort to experience this unique part of Hanoi.
There are two main areas to see the train: Old Quarter and Le Duan. In this blog, I will cover everything you need to know about visiting Hanoi Train Street, including how to navigate it, safety tips, and what to expect.

Getting to Hanoi Train Street
Navigating Hanoi Train Street can be a bit tricky, especially since the main entrance now has guards and barricades due to safety concerns. The street is known to be dangerous, and after some incidents, they decided to block it off. However, don’t let this stop you! The experience is iconic and definitely worth the effort.
There are two main areas to see the train: Old Quarter and Le Duan. I went to the first one.
Hanoi Train Street - Old Quarter
This is the most popular spot. When you arrive, you'll see the barricaded entrance. The guards are super strict about it and will not let you enter the street. You can either watch the train pass by from the side of the street, or, for a closer experience, be escorted by a café owner to one of the shops. This is a must if you want to see the train pass directly from the street. Find your seat and enjoy a drink or snack while you wait. If you have a specific shop in mind, contact them directly and ask for an escort. Otherwise, they'll guide you to any available spot. Café owners are strict about safety and will make sure everyone moves back when the train approaches. Remember to bring cash, as some cafes in the area may not accept credit cards!
Hanoi Train Street - Le Duan
This area is much less touristy and more relaxed. You can access the tracks here without barricades or security. Just find a coffee shop, settle in, and get ready to snap some pictures! Remember to bring cash, as some cafes in the area may not accept credit cards.
Safety First!
Hanoi Train Street can be dangerous, so please take all safety precautions seriously. The train passes just a few centimetres away, so do not stand on the tracks, try to touch the train, or sit closer than allowed. Visiting responsibly will help ensure that Hanoi Train Street remains open for everyone to enjoy!
Schedule
You can see the train any day of the week, however, the train schedule can vary so it’s best to check ahead of time. There is a board showing the train schedule at local coffee shops. The different sections of Hanoi Train Street have different train schedules, and most trains stop at the Hanoi Train Station, located between the two sections.

The Experience
Once you find your seat at one of the cafes you are allowed to go to the tracks and take some pictures. When the train approaches, the café owners will ask you to return to your seats and stay still. And then... the excitement begins! Just minutes after getting ready, you’ll hear the train. Then you will spot its lights, And then before you know it, it’s moving right past you! Even though the train moves slowly, it feels incredibly fast when it's so close! It’s a thrilling and unforgettable experience!
My Tips for Hanoi
1. Check the weather in advance
From May to October, Hanoi can be super rainy. Be sure to bring a poncho or umbrella and waterproof shoes to stay comfortable and dry.
2. Bring cash
Many places in Hanoi do not accept credit cards, so it's essential to carry cash with you. ATMs are widely available, so withdrawing Vietnamese Dong shouldn't be an issue.
3. Safety and Hospitality
Vietnam is a very safe and welcoming country. The locals are friendly and always willing to help, making your travel experience even more enjoyable!
4. Crossing the street
You have probably heard of how challenging it can be to cross the street in Vietnam. Not gonna lie, it is scary at first. The key here is to walk with confidence. Drivers are used to pedestrians, so maintain a steady pace and you will be okay!

I am a big fan of walking. I think you get to appreciate a new city much more this way. If you don’t feel like walking, my top recommendation is to utilise apps like Grab or Gojek. Simple, effective, and no fights regarding the fees. Moreover, by linking your cards to these apps, you prevent cash-related issues with the driver.
If you choose to go with a traditional taxi, don't forget to ask the driver to use the taximeter. In case they refuse (which can happen), agree on a fare beforehand to avoid any confusion later on. This simple step ensures transparency and prevents unexpected charges when you arrive at your destination.
